Aesthetic liposuction is a surgical procedure used to remove stubborn fat deposits in certain areas of the body that do not disappear through exercise or diet.

It is not a substitute for weight loss, but serves to shape the body.

Below we inform you about the methods of treatment, risks and costs of treatment in Switzerland.

What methods of liposuction are available?

There are various methods, with tumescent liposuction being the standard procedure. A special liquid (tumescent solution) is injected into the fatty tissue to loosen it and minimize bleeding. The other common methods are often based on this principle.

Vibration liposuction (VAL)

A special cannula vibrates quickly and loosens the fat cells, making them easier to suction out.

A fine, fan-shaped jet of water gently loosens the fat cells from the tissue before they are suctioned out.

These techniques use laser or ultrasound energy to liquefy the fat cells, which facilitates liposuction and can also result in some skin tightening.

How does liposuction work?

The procedure may vary depending on the scope and the method chosen, but generally includes the following steps:

Preparation

The areas to be treated are marked before the operation.

Anesthesia

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia.

Suction

Thin cannulas are inserted through tiny incisions in the skin and used to suction out the fat cells and the tumescent solution.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you will need to wear compression garments for several weeks to reduce swelling and support skin tightening.

Further information

A tummy tuck is often necessary in addition to liposuction. This combined procedure can be particularly useful after severe weight loss in order to achieve an optimal aesthetic result. Here we inform you about the tummy tuck, as well as risks and contraindications to the procedures.

Information on the tummy tuck

When is a tummy tuck performed?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is useful if excess skin and sagging abdominal muscles remain after severe weight loss or pregnancy, which cannot be removed by exercise or liposuction alone.

It is used to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall to achieve a firmer contour.

Can liposuction and a tummy tuck be combined?

Yes, the combination of both procedures, often referred to as "lipoabdominoplasty", is possible and frequently performed.

This has the advantage that excess fat can be specifically removed and the skin tightened at the same time to achieve a more harmonious overall result in a single operation. This also means that you only need one recovery period.

Risks and contraindications

What are the risks?

Like any surgical procedure, liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are associated with risks. General risks include:

  • Post-operative bleeding and bruising
  • Infections and wound healing disorders
  • Sensory disturbances or numbness in the treatment area
  • Anesthetic complications

Specific risks associated with liposuction include uneven results, dimpling and sagging skin. With a tummy tuck, scars are unavoidable and can be larger depending on the extent of the operation.

When are these procedures not carried out?

Surgery is generally not recommended for:

  • Severe obesity (liposuction is not a weight loss method)
  • Existing coagulation disorders
  • Unregulated diabetes mellitus
  • Severe cardiovascular diseases
  • Allergies to ingredients of the solutions used.

A slim body says a lot about you!

The attractiveness of an aesthetically slim body in Western societies is a complex phenomenon that is made up of a mixture of biological signals, cultural associations and psychological effects.

Here are the main reasons why a slim body is perceived as aesthetic and attractive:

  • Cultural and social associations - A slim body is seen as visible proof of self-control and discipline.
  • Wealth - Slimness is seen as a sign of wealth and belonging to higher social classes, as these often have access to better nutrition and fitness opportunities.
  • Vitality and health - A slim body (especially with a certain waist-to-hip/shoulder ratio) is associated with good health, physical fitness and the absence of chronic obesity-related diseases.
