Birth in Switzerland - Detailed information

Birth in Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine

Often problematic - especially for high-risk pregnancies

Births in countries such as Russia, Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan are often associated with considerable problems and risks for mother and child. Giving birth in the Urkaine is also not always the best choice for expectant mothers for geopolitical reasons. It is therefore not surprising that more and more mothers from these countries prefer to give birth abroad. There are various reasons for this. In the following, we would like to show you some of these reasons why giving birth abroad is the safe choice, especially in the case of a high-risk pregnancy.

We will also provide you with all the information you need on interesting and important topics such as

  • Nationality of the child at birth abroad (in Switzerland)

Dangers and risks in the countries vs. Switzerland
Safety, hygiene and quality standards

Russia/Belarus/Kazakhstan/Azerbaijan: In many state and rural facilities, the infrastructure (buildings, technical equipment) does not meet Western European standards. Hygiene standards are often not consistently at the same high level as in Switzerland, which increases the risk of nosocomial infections. The quality of care depends heavily on the personal skills of the doctor and less on standardized, evidence-based protocols.

Ukraine (war-related): The priority is the survival of the mother and child. Hygiene standards are difficult to maintain in improvised delivery rooms (bunkers, cellars). Medical care is severely affected by attacks on clinics and the destruction of critical infrastructure.

CIS countries: Often only available in regional or republican centers in large cities. In smaller clinics, the general pediatrician is responsible, not the highly specialized neonatologist. Neonatal intensive care units are often equipped with inadequate or outdated technical equipment, if available at all. There is often a serious shortage of specialized staff for the long-term care of premature babies.

Especially in the case of high-risk pregnancies or premature births, these conditions are often absolutely central and crucial for the survival of the newborn and the protection of the mother. For this reason, mothers of advanced age, for example, should definitely consider giving birth abroad.

The situation in Switzerland: In the highest level birthing centers in Switzerland, a specialist paediatrician is available around the clock. There are ultra-modern, well-equipped prenatal wards with state-of-the-art incubators, ventilators and specialized nursing staff.

A caesarean section is generally possible in all the countries mentioned, but the quality of the procedure is crucial.

  • Switzerland: Highest standards in anesthesia, surgical technique (often the gentle Misgav-Ladach method) and post-operative pain therapy.

  • Eastern Europe/Central Asia: The practice and quality of suture materials, pain management and the prevention of infection vary greatly from region to region and between state/private clinics. The risk of postoperative complications may be higher.

The survival rate of extremely premature babies (born before the 28th week of pregnancy and/or under 1000g) is an indicator of the performance of the entire perinatal and neonatal system.

  • Switzerland (gold standard):

    • Premature babies (from 25 weeks' gestation): Very high survival rate (often over 85%).

    • Extremely premature babies (22-23 weeks' gestation): The survival rate in specialized centers is over 50% (with intensive use of technology and high quality of life assurance).

  • Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan:

    • The rates are significantly lower than in Switzerland.

    • For extremely premature babies born in the 22nd to 24th week of pregnancy, the chances of survival are drastically lower outside the few top centers in the capital cities.

    • There is often a lack of equipment to provide optimal care for premature babies at high risk.

  • Ukraine (war-related):

    • The probability of survival is particularly at risk here.

    • Even if a premature baby is saved, the necessary continuous intensive care can be interrupted by evacuations or power cuts, leading to high mortality or severe long-term damage.

Swiss citizenship by descent

A child only receives Swiss citizenship automatically at birth if at least one parent is a Swiss citizen at the time of birth.

Foreign parents

If both parents are foreign nationals, the child receives the citizenship(s) of the parents, regardless of whether it was born on Swiss soil.

Advantages of giving birth in Switzerland

Switzerland is generally regarded as a country with a highly developed healthcare system. The benefits of giving birth there typically include:

High medical quality and safety:

Access to state-of-the-art perinatal and neonatal medicine (care for high-risk births, premature babies).

Interdisciplinary teams (gynecologists, midwives, neonatologists, anesthesiologists) are quickly available, which is particularly vital for high-risk pregnancies and unexpected complications.

Low rates of preventable maternal and fetal complications.

Comprehensive support:

Personal and individual care by qualified midwives before, during and after the birth, with the option of midwife-led birth in clinics or birth centers for low-risk women.

Cost sharing (deductible and excess) for all medical services in connection with pregnancy.

Options:

Choice between hospital, birth center or home birth.

With supplementary insurance, you often have a free choice of doctor and are entitled to higher room categories (semi-private/private), which offers more comfort and privacy.

BEWARE OF THE ENTRY HURDLE!

Can anyone travel to Switzerland for birth or treatment?

Entry for the purpose of giving birth without residence in Switzerland is subject to the normal entry and residence regulations, which are strictly enforced by Switzerland.

Schengen/visa requirement

Whether someone can enter the country for birth depends largely on their nationality:

  • Citizens from the EU/EFTA have the right of entry and residence (subject to the registration deadlines) due to the free movement of persons.

  • Citizens from most third countries (e.g. Russia, Kazakhstan) require a visa (Schengen visa for short stays or a national visa for longer stays).

Purpose of the stay ("birth tourism")

  • The Swiss authorities check the purpose of the stay very carefully. Entering the country specifically to give birth (often referred to as "birth tourism") is generally not a recognized reason for issuing a residence visa or residence permit.

  • The expectant parents must prove that they have the necessary financial means for the entire stay, the delivery and the return journey.

  • Entry may be refused without a valid residence permit or a corresponding visa.

We at Hermann Health will take care of all the formalities for you.

Gynecology in Switzerland

Gynecology in Switzerland is characterized by cutting-edge medicine, personal care and the availability of the latest procedures procedures. This makes Switzerland particularly attractive for international patients, who are looking for the highest quality and discretion for complex or delicate issues.

  1. Highest quality standards and safety:

    • Evidence-based medicine: Swiss clinics and doctors work according to the latest international guidelines and research findings.

    • Low complication rates: Clinics, especially private clinics, often have very low infection rates and complications following surgical procedures.

    • Modern infrastructure: access to first-class operating theaters, intensive care units and diagnostic equipment (e.g. 3D/4D ultrasound, MRI).

  2. Specialized centers:

    • In contrast to general departments, many Swiss clinics have certified centers for specific, complex diseases.

    • This ensures interdisciplinary care (e.g. gynecologist, oncologist, radiologist, pain therapist work closely together).

  3. Minimally invasive surgery:

    • There is a strong focus on gentle surgical methods (laparoscopy, robotic surgery such as Da Vinci), which leads to smaller scars, faster recovery and shorter hospital stays.

  4. Discretion and patient comfort:

    • In the private clinics in particular, great importance is attached to individual care, discretion and first-class hospitality, which promotes well-being and recovery.
