An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the eye area.
It is used to remove excess skin, sagging muscles and fat pads on the upper and lower eyelids, which can often lead to a tired or sad appearance.

What exactly is being done?
The procedure can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both at the same time.
Upper eyelid lift
- The surgeon marks the excess skin.
- A fine incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid so that the scar is barely visible.
- Excess skin and, if necessary, fatty tissue and muscle parts are removed.
- The skin is tightened and the wound is closed with fine sutures.
Lower eyelid lift
- The incision is made directly under the lash line.
- Fat pads that cause the "bags under the eyes" can be removed or redistributed to create an even contour.
- Excess skin is removed and the wound is closed.

Suitability and techniques

What different techniques are used?
Transconjunctival blepharoplasty
This is a method of lower eyelid lifting in which the incision is made on the inside of the eyelid. It is particularly suitable for removing fat pads in young patients without significant excess skin. The advantage is that no external scars are visible.
Laser blepharoplasty
A laser is used instead of a scalpel. This can also tighten the skin, which is an advantage for some patients.
For whom is an eyelid lift not suitable?
An eyelid lift is not suitable for everyone. The following factors can speak against a procedure:
Serious eye diseases
These include glaucoma or dry eyes.
Certain chronic diseases

Costs of an eyelid lift in Switzerland
The cost of an eyelid lift varies depending on the extent of the procedure (upper, lower or both eyelids) and the clinic.

These are approximate figures.
As this is an aesthetic procedure in most cases, the costs are not covered by health insurance. An exception is a functional impairment, e.g. if the drooping upper eyelids restrict the field of vision; in this case, the costs may be covered.
Recovery and social skills
First days
Severe swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days. Cooling and rest are important.
Sociability
After about 10 to 14 days, most of the swelling and bruising will have subsided to such an extent that you will be able to take part in social life again.
Final result
The complete healing process takes longer. The final result is only visible after 3 to 6 months, when all swelling has completely subsided.
