A facelift is a common cosmetic procedure in Switzerland that is performed by specialists in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery or facial surgery.

Approximately 6% of the more than 50,000 surgical cosmetic procedures performed in Switzerland each year are in the area of "lifts". This means that around 3,000 surgical facelifts are performed in Switzerland every year.

Facelift methods

Today, five different facelift methods are generally used. Some of these differ greatly from one another and depend on many factors. It is important that you speak to a specialist on this subject who can assess you, your wishes, your face, the structure of your house and the prospects of success and give you the best possible advice.

SMAS lifting

Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System

This is the most common and "standard" method today. It not only tightens the skin, but also lifts and repositions the superficial muscle layer (SMAS) of the face. This ensures a lasting correction of sagging cheeks and jowls and prevents the face from looking "mask-like" after the procedure.

Deep Plane Facelift

deep facelift

This method goes even deeper than the SMAS lift. The deeper facial structures, including the muscles and connective tissue, are lifted as a unit. As the skin and SMAS are mobilized together, the result is often particularly natural and long-lasting.

Mini facelift

less invasive procedure

This procedure is less invasive than a classic facelift and is suitable for patients with less pronounced signs of ageing, particularly in the lower face and chin area. The incisions are shorter and the recovery time is usually shorter. It is ideal for younger patients who want to correct the first signs of ageing.

Midface Lift

midface lift

This lift focuses on the cheek area. The procedure is often performed through an incision below the eyelid or in the temple area to lift the cheeks and smooth the nasolabial folds.

Thread lifting

minimally invasive procedure

This is a minimally invasive procedure that is often offered as an alternative or supplement to a surgical facelift. Special threads with small barbs are inserted under the skin to tighten the tissue. However, the effect is generally less pronounced and shorter-lasting than a surgical facelift.

Possible complications and risks

Facelift operations are considered safe if they are performed by a qualified specialist in plastic and aesthetic surgery.

Nevertheless, as with any surgical procedure, certain risks and complications are possible:

Postoperative bleeding and hematomas (bruising): Can occur in the first 24 to 48 hours after the operation. They are usually the most common complication.

Nerve injuries: Very rare, but possible, is facial nerve injury, which can lead to temporary or, in extremely rare cases, permanent paralysis of the facial muscles.

Wound healing disorders and infections: Rare complications that can be minimized by following postoperative care instructions and good preoperative preparation.

Hair loss: Temporary or permanent hair loss at the hairline is possible.

Scarring: The incisions are usually made in such a way that the scars are barely visible (in the hairline, in front of and behind the ear). Nevertheless, scars can be more noticeable, especially in smokers.

Important to know:

Consultation: Before any procedure, a comprehensive consultation with an experienced specialist is essential to determine the appropriate method and discuss realistic expectations.

Goals: The goal is usually a natural and fresh appearance without the face appearing "mask-like" or overly tightened.

Recovery and social skills

Duration of treatment:

A classic facelift usually takes 3 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. A mini facelift can be shorter.

Immediate aftercare:

Swelling, bruising and numbness are to be expected after the procedure. A bandage is applied, which is usually removed after 1 to 2 days.

Sociability:

After around 10 to 14 days, most of the bruising and swelling will have subsided to such an extent that you will be able to take part in social life again. Make-up can usually be reapplied after 2 to 3 weeks.

Duration of recovery:

Full recovery takes longer. The swelling subsides over a period of weeks. The final result is often only fully visible after 3 to 6 months, as the tissue needs time to settle and the scars to fade. Strenuous physical activity and sport should be avoided for around 4 to 6 weeks.
