About the Swiss sanatorium Leukerbad
Leukerbad, Switzerland is one of the largest thermal and wellness resorts in the Alps, located at an altitude of 1,411 meters in the canton of Valais. The resort is renowned for its 65 thermal springs, which provide approximately 3.9 million liters of mineral water daily, with temperatures reaching up to 51°C (123.8°F). This healing water feeds more than 20 pools, including some of the largest thermal complexes in Europe — Leukerbad Therme and Walliser Alpentherme.
This clinic provides services for the general recovery of the body, as well as strengthening the immune system. But the main focus of treatment at the Leukerbad Clinic is diseases of the musculoskeletal system, as well as their prevention and rehabilitation.
The LEUKERBAD CLINIC, an internationally renowned spa resort in Switzerland, is located at an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, amidst the spectacular Alpine mountains. The unique thermal water with a constant temperature of 51°C flows out of them.
The sanatorium incorporates elements of traditional medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and naturopathy. Techniques are combined to create state-of-the-art treatment plans. With complete and efficient equipment and two thermal water pools, you will feel the effect of European service.
A multidisciplinary team of experts in rehabilitation and integrative medicine accompany the patient step by step in their rehabilitation and recovery course.
- 1,570 m2 of training area (without swimming pools)
- About 1,000 patients a year
- More than 19,000 days of hospitalization per year
- The average length of stay at the facility is 18 days.
Treatment Programs
Leukerbad offers a wide range of programs for musculoskeletal rehabilitation. These include physiotherapy, thalassotherapy, Ayurvedic and Indonesian techniques, as well as various types of massages and body wraps. A particular convenience for guests is the Lindner Hotel & Alpentherme 4*, which is connected to both the medical and thermal centers via a covered underground passage.
Unique Underground Passage System
One of the resort’s key features is its extensive network of underground corridors connecting hotels with thermal complexes. This is especially valuable during the winter season, when moving outside can be uncomfortable.
The Thermalhotels & Walliser Alpentherme complex includes several buildings — Maison Blanche, Hotel de France, and Grand Bain. All of them are interconnected and linked to the Walliser Alpentherme thermal center via covered underground walkways.
Hotel de France, as part of the complex, offers direct underground access to the thermal center, allowing guests to reach treatments easily without having to go outside.
This underground connection infrastructure makes Leukerbad not only comfortable but also truly unique — a resort perfectly suited for healing and relaxation at any time of the year.
History of the Leukerbad Clinic
The Swiss Leukerbad Clinic was founded in 1961 as a specialized center for rheumatology and rehabilitation. From its early years, the institution received official recognition from Swiss health authorities and quickly became a reputable medical facility.
As early as 1962, a neurology clinic was opened, and in 1975, an open-air thermal pool was built, enhancing the clinic’s therapeutic infrastructure. The clinic actively collaborated with professional sports: from 1987 to 2012, its medical team was led by Dr. Hans Vesna — the physician of the Swiss national ski team.
In 1999, two specialized clinics were merged, and in 2012, the center came under private management led by Daniel Salzmann. By 2015, major renovations were completed, allowing the clinic to offer patients not only top-quality medical care but also hotel-level comfort in line with European standards.
Today, the Leukerbad Clinic is a modern medical institution that combines experience, thermal resources, and advanced rehabilitation methods.
